Dead Men Tell No Tales

STORY

The year is 1801. There is a rumor going around the small port town of Costa Rhonda that there is Spanish galleon, docked at a port no further than a hundred miles away from Costa Rhonda. The English town would not normally care about a ship docked at a port, but this ship is different, it is special. For, rumored to be aboard this ship, is a chest full of nothing but the finest gold the world. This Spanish galleon is also docked at a port on the small island of La Palma; this port just happens to be the most heavily guarded port in Spanish possession. At the mention of gold, some of Costa Rhonda’s most misunderstood members emerge, the pirates. Together they form a crew and set out to claim their treasure. All of them are in the full knowledge of the dangers, but they also know the degree of the reward. They must battle the raging seas, other pirates, the Spanish who are defending the galleon, and overcome their own differences to succeed. They all are different, but they are all gathered together for the same reason. The question now is, will they succeed?

RULES

-No god modding
-Keep cursing to a minimum
-No all ooc posts
-Keep it kid friendly
-Keep the blood and gore to a minimum
-Keep in character (you’re a pirate)

CHARACTERS

-Captain - respected for their leadership and navigation skills and would be level-headed and decisive with the pirate crew in the heat of battle
-First Mate - captain's right-hand man and the one who assumes his role if he were killed in battle or can no longer perform his duties
-Quartermaster - second-in-command and almost a co-captain because they represent the best interests of the crew
-Boatswain- oversees several junior officers who share his responsibility for the crew's morale and work efficiency as well as the maintenance and repair of the hull, rigging, lines, cables, sails, and anchors
-Gunner - leader of any separate group manning the artillery. His special skill is in aiming, but he oversees the four to six men required to take the gun through the steps of loading, aiming, firing, resetting, and swabbing for the next load. He also works to ensure the gun crew's safety in avoiding dangerous overheating or excessive recoiling of the weapon.
-Powder Monkey– performs some of the most dangerous work on the ship
-Carpenter - repair battle damage to masts, yards, hatches, and the hull, but keeps the ship's leaky seams in check with wooden plugs and oakum fibers
-Surgeon – heal fevers or battle wounds with an assortment of mercurial medicines or other current treatments
-Cook – a cook
-Cooper - a barrel maker
-Sailor – a junior officer overseen by a Boatswain, they maintain and repair the hull, rigging, lines, cables, sails, and anchors

NOTES

-Only captains can name ships
-Each crew member must be part of an existing ship/crew
-Try to talk in pirate jargon (you don’t however have to talk like this ‘Arrg! Me matey, how do the ship’s rigging come along?’ that is just too hard to read. But do try to use the phrases below.

PIRATE LINGO

- I am well aware that no one here is a pirate, so I have created this mini dictionary of pirate phrases to use. (Just to be clear, when talking in the RP, you do not hve to talk like a pirate, but try to use some of these phrases.)

All Hands Hoay! - "All Hands on Deck!", everyone on the ship called to the deck, usually for action
Avast - "Avast Ye!" - "Stop and pay attention." like, "Get a load of this."
Abaft - toward the back end or stern of the boat
Athwart ships - at a right angle to the midline or centerline of the boat, which is an imaginary line drawn from bow to stern that equally divides the ship
Binnacle - from the Latin word for 'dwelling place', a box or case which houses the compass upon the deck.
Coaming - A vertical rim surrounding hatch openings and such to keep any water on deck from entering below it, excellent for tripping on
Duffle- everything a sailor owns, also the nickname for the bag which holds it
Fo'c's'le - an abbreviation for forecastle, the forward most part of the ship
Futtock Shrouds- pieces joining the rigging of lower and top masts
Holystone - bars of sandstone would be used to scrub the decks, the softer areas of the stone would wear away and leave holes, also, the sailors were said to look like they were praying as they knelt to scrub
Jacob's Ladder- the rope ladder used to climb aboard the ship
Mizzen - the third mast from the bow on a vessel having three or more masts, or the mast immediately aft of the main-mast
Monkey - A small cannon
Orlop - the deck for stowing cables
Poop Deck- the deck that is the furthest and the highest back, usually above the Captain's quarters
Rullock - the cutaway or notch on the side rail of the boat from which oars would pivot
Landlubber- 'lubber' was an old English word for a big, slow, clumsy person, and this term was aimed at those persons on ship who were not very skilled or at ease with ship life, as if to say, "You were no better on the land.”
Swing the Lead - A lead weight swung from a line into water when near shore was a way to measure depth, the job's simple requirements caused the phrase to evolve into a term for slacking off
Davy Jones's Locker - the imaginary place at the ocean bottom that holds dead sailors and pirates...a reference to death. Davy Jones was said to be an evil spirit lurking at sea, waiting to escort dead sailors or pirates to his place or locker at the bottom of the waters. He went on to have a successful music career with the Monkees many years later.
To be in Davy's Grip: To be close to death, or frightened.
To have the Davies or the Joneseys: To be frightened
To see you to Davy Jones: To threaten to kill some one

Jack stood on the poop deck and looked out over the ocean. To any casual observer he seemed to be observing the chop of the waves and the beautiful sunrise. But to any crew member it was obvious what he was doing. Jack shifted his wieght from foot to foot, It has to be out there some where.

Nileve jumped up onto the bow of her ship, and down the long horn (I don't know what it's called, that beam sticking from the bow, usually got the mermaid underneath it) in the front of the Silver Snow. Unlike most pirate ships that had women, or mermaids, or syrians on the front, Nileve's had a wolf, a female wolf, but a wolf. Silver Snow, a rumor back from her home town to be a mother to all white wolves. She thought that it was Twilight's mother, the grey wolf that stalked her constantly. She laughed, and jumped back onto deck. Twilight jumped from where he lay to his master side. Nileve knew this crew was different, a wolf at the head, mostly females aboard, the captian having a wolf instead of a parrot. She laughed to herself, yes, this was a different crew. But that's what made them the best. She looked out over the sea, thinking....they had gold to get.

ooc: is that like the PG, PG-13?

Jack scanned the horizon, looking, watching, with his full being. He was so engulfed in watching that he didn't notice Arron walk up next to him. "Sir, the crew is ready when you are. Shall we raise the anchor?" After a moment of talk Jack nodded solemly, "Yes Q, raise the anchor, hoist the sail!" Arron turned and relayed orders to the crew.

Nileve turned back to the crew. They had been sailing for about an hour, but they were going to be out for a while. Nileve walked down, and spotted Oni, who was scanning the sky. Again. She was usually checking the weather at noon, after Nileve had done it. Nileve liked Oni a lot, she trusted her, which was rare for her to trust anyone outside her family. She left Oni to her business.

Arron walked around the deck of the small war ship. Gold, that was what had brought him here, and that he thought was going to be the reason his life ended, gold.

Jack scanned teh horizon still, watching. Finally he turned away and looked out over the ship's deck.

Nileve went down to her cabin, and looked over the sea charts she had. They had been a tough find, but lucky she had Me'tal with her then. That's how they had met. The nimble and flexible girl helped her get a hold of the maps, and got a spot on the crew. She was a nice asset to it too.

Jack called his crew together. He looked over the small but sturdy group. He paused and then said, "Do I have your consent to be your Captain?" There was a burst of noise on teh affirmative from the crew. Jack nodded, "Then I ask that any man who does not wish to die step off the boat at teh next port. I do not wish to have a strong crew mixed with a crew of cowards, because a great crew is only as strong as it's weakest member." Jack paused, "With that said, with your consent we will sail on to where we will meet the galleon and claim our fortune!" The crew cheered and then went back to work.

Nileve was back on the bow. Oni had finished with her weather log, and came to report,"Clear skies, perfect sailing weather. How long do we sail today, Captian?" Her thick Italian accent blended with her English beautifully. Nileve spoke English, and it was the offical lauguage of her ship. A few members (Me'tal) who were not very fluent with it usually asked Oni, Belle, or Claire to translate. Or Arros, the new sailor. He had a nice tounge on him. Nileve thought,"I hope he keeps it shut when he doesn't need it." Nileve replied to her first mate,"We have enough stores to sail for a few days. There is a desserted island north of here, with a large store that Okie and I put up a few months back. We'll sail for a few days along the coast, and stop there to restock, and contuie that till we have to dock. Tell Belle and the other carpenters to be on double duty with the hull. We don't want to damage it right now." Oni nodded, and rushed off to get those orders carried out. Nileve looked out over the sea, thinking she saw a little dingy on the horizon, but she was sure. She's ask Oni if she could get her spy glass later on. At any rate, it was getting here soon. It looked half built.

Oni rushed down to the hull where she found Belle cleaning her axe. Oni shoke her head, and walked up,"We're staying at sea for a while. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for leaks. We don't want to go down to the locker without putting in something for that gold." The French girl looked up,"Let me handle my job, me cheire', and you handle your's. Don't doubt our skills with this ship, I've been working on it for longer than you have been first mate. Before Captian even owned it." Oni rolled her eyes, and went back to her work.

Peggy watched as his the two sailors under his watch worked. One stopped and took a breath. He snapped at her to get back to work. Ellie waited until Peggy turned his back and then rolled her eyes. She knelt back down and began scrubbing the deck again.

Jack sat down in his cabin and went over old sea charts. They were torn in places and out dated, but they contained information that could be found in no other map.

Arron ran into the captain's cabin, "Sir a vessel has been spotted to starboard." Jack walked out with Arron, who handed him a spyglass. Jack looked through the glass, sure enough there was a ship. It was to far away to identify. "Take us to port, away from that vessel. I don't want to get to close if we can't identify it." "Aye Aye sir!" Arron ran off to inform the helmsmen of the captain's orders.

Nileve shouted for the crew to drop the anchor, and the ship came to a stop next to the small ship. Nileve jumped up onto the railing of her ship, and called,"Well, if it's isn't Master Sparrow. Where's the Pearl, Jack?" Jack S. (I'll put the S to lessen confusion) looked up at the Silver Snow's captian. He rolled his eyes,"Seems you've faired better. The Pearl isn't mine any more. That blasted --- Barbosa has it." Nileve called,"So you got your ship stolen again. You really shouldn't let it out of your sight. What do you want, Jack?" Jack S. replied,"Gold, love. I hear they've got the motherload around here, and I thought you'd want someone with more experince to help you." Nileve laughed,"More experince at what? Losing your ship? No, thanks, Sparrow, I'd like to keep this one. But you're daughter is welcome. I need another gunner." She heard some laughter behind her, and she grinned. Jack S. replied,"Well, what I've got, you haven't, and you'd better give something if you want what it is I've got." Nileve looked at Oni and saw her head spin in confusion. Nileve glanced back down,"Jack, if you've got nothing more than to confuse my crew, then I don't want it." She could tell Jack was getting angry, and she looked at Oni,"Bring them up." Oni nodded.
